National Parks & Reserves

From giant boulders to small birds, from grassy plains to hidden waterholes, there is so much to see in the National Parks, Conservation Reserves and Historical Reserves of the Barkly region.

When driving along the Stuart Highway north of Wauchope you can't help but be amazed by Karlu Karlu / The Devils Marbles; even from the road. A stop here really is worthwhile. Wander amongst the giant stones.  Find out about their sacred significance to local Aboriginal people.

Some of the other sites along the Stuart Highway have a more recent history. The Telegraph Stations at Barrow Creek and Tennant Creek helped connect Australia to Britain in1872.  A darker history is recognised at Attack Creek.

If you want to get off the beaten track, spend some time at The Old Police Station Waterhole in the Davenport Ranges.  Its a great place to camp, settle in and enjoy the wildlife. For a completely different nature experience, head to Connells Lagoon just north of Alexandria Station on the old Ranken Stock Road. A Parks and Wildlife survey of the Reserve found 9 mammal species, 19 reptile and 53 bird species, and 189 different plant species. And you prbably won't see another human while you're there!
